A visit to Paris, how to explore the city

This blog post was as a memory lane for me, as my visit to Paris happened as a celebration of the first wedding anniversary, and now I’m 11 years married. But guess what, everything that was in Paris 10 years ago, is still there (despite a bit of changed Notre Dame Cathedras after the fire in 2019).

Paris is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and there are so many things to see and do during a visit to Paris. From the iconic Eiffel Tower to the historic Notre-Dame Cathedral, the city is full of incredible sights and attractions that draw millions of visitors every year. Here I will explore some of the most popular places to visit in Paris and provide tips on how to make the most of your time in the city.

No visit to Paris can go without a trip to the Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel tower, which was completed in 1889, is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world. Visitors can take the elevator to the top of the tower and enjoy breathtaking views of the city below. The Eiffel Tower is open to visitors all year round, and the best time to visit is during the early morning or late evening when there are fewer crowds (really?).

You can take the stairs or the elevator to the top of the tower, and once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the city. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even book a table at the Eiffel Tower restaurant, which offers gourmet cuisine and stunning views of the city. For the more adventurous, there is even a zip line that takes you from the second floor of the tower to the ground below.

Can Louvre Museum be explored in one day?

My thought to the headline is – no, if you are a true art lover. The Louvre Museum is one of the largest and most famous museums in the world, and it is home to some of the most famous works of art in history. The museum’s collection includes the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, the Venus de Milo, and the Winged Victory of Samothrace.

The Louvre Museum is massive, and it can be overwhelming to explore on your own. The recommendation could be to take a guided tour of the museum, which will provide you with a deeper understanding of the art and history behind the museum’s collection.

Tip: for not so much art enthusiasts, there is a fast track route straight to the Mona Lisa painting.

Other museums worth a visit

Orsay’s museum. Stepping into the Musée d’Orsay is like embarking on a mesmerizing voyage through time and art. Housed in a former railway station, this museum is a true treasure trove of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masterpieces. As you wander its hallowed halls, you’ll find yourself face-to-face with iconic works by Monet, Van Gogh, Degas, and countless others. It’s a place where history and creativity converge, making every visit to Orsay’s Museum an enchanting and enlightening experience for art aficionados and curious travelers alike.

The Centre Pompidou, or the Pompidou Museum is an architectural marvel in the heart of Paris stands out with its colorful, inside-out design, showcasing its structural elements proudly on the exterior. Inside, you’ll find an avant-garde collection of contemporary and modern art that pushes the boundaries of creativity. From mind-bending installations to thought-provoking exhibitions, the Pompidou Museum is a dynamic space that challenges your perception of what art can be.

As you ascend the iconic escalators on the building’s exterior, the sprawling views of Paris are just as captivating as the art within, making it an essential stop for anyone seeking a glimpse into the cutting edge of the art world during their visit to Paris.

Notre-Dame Cathedral as it was 10 years ago

The Notre-Dame Cathedral is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture and is one of the most famous cathedrals in the world. Unfortunately, the cathedral suffered a devastating fire in 2019, but it is currently undergoing restoration and is still worth to see during a visit to Paris. While the cathedral is not open to the public at the moment, you can still admire the stunning architecture from the outside.

The Notre-Dame Cathedral is located on the Île de la Cité, which is one of the most picturesque parts of Paris. The island is surrounded by the Seine River and is home to several other historic landmarks, including the Sainte Chapelle and the Conciergerie.

The Champs-Élysées is a street

Despite the heavenly name could raise really high expectations, The Champs-Élysées is a street. It is one of the most famous streets in Paris and is home to many high-end shops and restaurants. The street stretches for over a mile and leads directly to the Arc de Triomphe, another famous Paris landmark. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll down the Champs-Élysées and take in the sights and sounds of the city.

Arc de Triomphe

A visit to Paris is a journey through time and history, and at the heart of it all stands the magnificent Arc de Triomphe. This iconic monument, commissioned by Napoleon after his victories, is a symbol of France’s indomitable spirit. As you stand beneath the colossal arch, you can’t help but be awestruck by its intricate design and the grandeur of the Champs-Élysées radiating from its center.

Climbing to the top is a must, offering a spectacular panorama of the city, with the Eiffel Tower to the west and the bustling city streets stretching out in all directions. The Arc de Triomphe is not just an architectural marvel, it’s a testament to the enduring legacy of Paris, and a must-visit on your journey through this timeless city.

Take the Seine River tour, or not

The Seine River is one of the most important waterways in France and flows through the heart of Paris. Visitors can take a boat tour of the river and see many of the city’s most famous landmarks from a unique perspective. The riverbanks are also a great place for a leisurely walk or a picnic.

There are several river cruise companies in Paris, and you can choose from a variety of cruises that range from short 1-hour cruises to longer dinner cruises. Why there is a “or not” in the heading? I took the boat trip, and to my experience the city was not visible from the boat, as the river is way below the views.

Nevertheless, the river cruise on the Seine is a great way to see the city from a different perspective and take in the sights and sounds of Paris at a relaxed pace.

The beautiful Monmartre

A visit to Paris wouldn’t be complete without a stroll through the enchanting streets of Montmartre. It is a historic neighborhood that is famous for its bohemian vibe and artistic heritage. Visitors can explore the many art galleries and studios in the area and take in the stunning views of the city from the top of the hill. The neighborhood is also home to the iconic Basilica of the Sacré-Cœur.

Montmartre has long been a haven for artists, and you can feel their creative spirit alive in every corner, from the quaint cafés where Picasso and Van Gogh once found inspiration to the bustling Place du Tertre, where local artists display their work. The panoramic views of Paris from the steps of the basilica are nothing short of breathtaking, offering a perfect backdrop for creating memories that will forever be etched in your heart during your visit to Paris.

I would say this is the most beautiful church for me in Paris, as well as the view from it to the city is stunning.

Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie is as good as it sounds

The Paris Science Museum, known as the “Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie,” is a captivating haven for the curious mind. Located within Parc de la Villette, this expansive museum is a celebration of science and innovation. From interactive exhibits that explore the wonders of the universe to hands-on experiments that ignite your imagination, the museum invites visitors of all ages to embark on a thrilling journey through the realms of discovery.

Whether you’re gazing at the stars in the planetarium, experimenting in the Fab Lab, or exploring the secrets of the human body, the Paris Science Museum offers an engaging and educational experience that reminds us all of the boundless wonders of the natural world and the marvels of human achievement. It’s a must-visit destination for anyone with a passion for exploration and a thirst for knowledge. And again – full day is the least you can spend there during your visit to Paris.

The Palace of Versailles could be overrated

The Palace of Versailles is a magnificent royal palace located just outside of Paris. The palace was the home of the French monarchy for over 100 years and is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture. Visitors can explore the palace’s many rooms and halls and admire the incredible gardens and fountains all at the additional price.

Why overrated? The size of the palace is magnificent, and the gardens are wow, though when you go inside, everything looks the same in each and every room. The hall of mirrors is something worth to visit, though time has left marks on those mirrors, so it doesn’t look as shiny and clean as in the photoshopped photos. Apart from this, there are crowds of tourists, but of course, I think they are everywhere in Paris.
